Exposing the real terrorism with Rocky The Dolphin

The story of Rocky The Dolphin is an incredible example of how direct action, coupled with intense campaigning, can have massive impact on the welfare of animals.

Rocky had been imprisoned in Morcambe Marineland for over 20 years. His home was a tiny concrete poole, and though just yards from the sea, he lived in forced isolation. Every day he was made to perform the same degrading tricks.

A group of activists decided to free Rocky. They made a make-shift stretcher, and a large catching net and entered the dolphinarium. Unfortunately they were spotted by a worker in an over-looking hotel.

The police were waiting as the would-be liberators attempted to leave, and four people were arrested. Despite the four being found guilty and given a fine, their high profile arrest had paved the way for an intense grass roots campaign.

Following a series of publicity stunts and demo's supported by a tabloid newspaper, Marineland was forced to close, and Rocky was taken to the open sea in the Caicos Islands. As a result of this action, not only was Rocky freed but it lead to the closure of every other dolphinarium in the UK.
